The fiery orange stars atop 600 mm stems peeking out of the wooded margins of the forests in late summer make for an interesting display. Suited for mass displays in evergreen forest margins or in pots on the verandah. Slightly damp soil in summer and allow to dry somewhat in winter.

Dierama sertum TopCreate wish list to remember item
This yellow Hare Bell can take medium to heavy frost. Plant at least 15 cm below ground level and keep dry in winter. The yellowed flowering Dierama has silvery white bracts and flowers in early summer.

The lilac to pink Hare Bell flowers in early spring and the pendulous flowers wave atop stems over one metre in length. Best suited for planting near a pond where the reflection is best displayed on the still mirrors of the water.

Eucomis hybrids TopCreate wish list to remember item
These pineapple flowers appear in early summer. The flower stems are up to 500 mm in length and will slowly open over a period of 2 to 4 weeks. Even once the flowers have gone, the seeds carry on with the showy green to maroon display. Suited to pot culture these semi frost tender bulbs need to be planted about 10 cm below the soil level.

Now renamed Merwilla plumbea.
The Blue Squill of Natal has long lasting dainty star-shaped flowers spread over the 500 mm stem. The flowers open one at a time from the bottom upwards. Plant this frost hardy bulb partially exposed and the reward will be flowers in spring and early summer. Plant in large groups to get the maximum effect.

Minimum 130 mm in circumference.

The trembling white flowers gives this interesting and uncommon plant it's name. Plant at least 5 cm below the surface, water well in spring and summer. Blooms in early summer, needs partial shade for the roots. Plant in humus rich soil.

Tulbaghia simmieri Top
Tulbaghia or wild garlic displays long stemmed white, lilac or pink flowers. These are long lasting and are produced in compact bunches. Plant in well draining soil and leave bulbs partially exposed. Frost tender. Easy to grow. Sucker well and soon form clumps.

Minimum 30 mm circumference and 300 mm in length.
